Greenhouse gases reached record levels in 2009

A report from the United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) revealed that even an economic downturn and efforts to reduce greenhouse gases didn’t stop them from reaching record levels in 2009.
Noting that carbon dioxide concentrations have increased 38% and methane 158% since pre-industrial times, the scientists also reported more recent rises in atmospheric methane observed between 2007 and 2009.

WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud warned that further warming and additional methane releases from the Arctic permafrost and wetlands could lead to a tipping point that would set off runaway global warming.

Secretary-General Jarraud called for a complete halt to the emissions, stating, “If we continue business as usual, we will not achieve the level of atmospheric concentration that would allow a two-degree Celsius target.”

Experts in Arctic nations such as Norway have also been observing steeply rising levels of atmospheric methane in recent years.

Ellen Hambro – Director of Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency: The concentrations of methane in Svalbard are very high, and that is very worrisome. We are looking into what is the cause. It may be because the permafrost is thawing, and the methane is released, and if that is the case, it means that we are approaching such a tipping point. And then it is very serious. Then it means that we have put into action an accelerating process, a self-reinforcing process that makes global warming go even faster.

US and Canadian scientists traveling to the Arctic have noted increased methane gas being released from the Earth’s melting permafrost, which is storing immense amounts of methane beneath the frozen surface

Other research has also highlighted how quickly the temperature is rising in the Arctic, much faster than in the rest of the world. This means a vast quantity of methane could be released from the previously frozen soil very quickly, which would be a complete disaster for life on Earth.

One fact is clear: if we stop meat consumption and livestock raising, we will also eliminate one of the most heat-trapping gases, which is methane. And since this gas disappears more quickly from the atmosphere, the planet will cool almost immediately. This will also address problems like the melting permafrost,
which will otherwise emit more methane if nothing is done to halt it.

Worldwide mayors support veg policies for sustainable cities

With a shared belief that city governments can play a large role in helping mitigate climate change, about 3,000 local and regional leaders gathered in Mexico City, Mexico to pledge support for the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference while making their own cities more sustainable. The need to shift urban consumption habits was highlighted, which included agricultural products.

Bertrand Delanoe – Mayor of Paris, France: We want green growth. We want organic farming to replace this destructive agriculture.

Antonio Villaraigosa – Mayor of Los Angeles, California, USA: Cities need to lead the way.

Joey Salceda – Governor of Albay, The Philippines: Cities have more flexibility in getting something done now.

Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, South Africa: Every individual must make a contribution. In this regard, let’s do all we can.

VOICE: The hosting Mexico City government catered an organic vegetarian lunch for all attendees.

Martha Delgado – Secretary of the Environment for Mexico City: We offered a vegetarian and organic menu for mayors, and we also took that opportunity to sensitize their consciousness about the meat, the generation of methane, also the land that we are losing because of growing animals.

Dr. Alejandro Chanona – Mexican delegate: We are so focused on carbon dioxide. However, methane, which is one of the key greenhouse gas effects, it’s produced because of the way we produce food.

Not only in terms of crops but also in the way we round cattle. If we don’t modify the patterns, we will continue polluting and also emitting such an amount of gases that it is a …how to put it in English, it is a mirage to believe that the only problem is industrial capacity or even cars or the way we consume oil and gases. So, this is a very important point, and let’s debate it also in the COP16.

Victor Lichtinger – Former Mexican Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources: I believe that the issue of dietary change is fundamental, and it has to be dealt with, since, for example, meat generates and produces and has as a result the use of so much energy. And if we change our diet, certainly, especially in the developed world, where the impact of the lifestyle is so bad on the environment, it will be very very important.

Mayors Climate Summit convenes in Mexico

On Sunday, November 21, 138 mayors from 43 nations gathered in Mexico City, Mexico for the Mayors Climate Summit to pledge their help together in mitigating global warming. Supreme Master Television’s correspondent brings us this report.

Correspondent (M): Greetings from Mexico City, Mexico! We are here where the World Mayors Summit on Climate was held on Sunday, November 21. The meeting united municipal leaders from around the globe in signing the Mexico City Pact.

This voluntary agreement is a statement to the international community of the cities’ collective commitment to address climate change.

VOICE: In particular, the pact, which will be presented at the United Nations Climate Conference starting on November 29 in Cancún, Mexico, offers action plans as well as an online Local Climate Actions Record that allows cities to post their mitigation measures and achievements for easy viewing by the public.

Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary, UNFCCC (F): Cities have a huge responsibility in contributing to bringing down greenhouse gas emissions.

Correspondent (M): Conference attendees emphasized the urgency of climate change and the need for immediate actions to reverse it.

Marcelo Ebrard – Mayor of Mexico City (M): This opens the door of a technology that we’re looking for to substitute vehicles that pollute too much.

Correspondent (M): The government of Mexico City invited as a special guest Supreme Master Ching Hai, who has previously been welcomed at government-held climate change conferences in Mexico.

As she could not physically attend the summit due to her busy schedule, Supreme Master Ching Hai sent delegates to support the convention. Supreme Master Ching Hai also sent a well-wishing letter for the organizers and all distinguished guests in attendance.

VOICE: On the eve of the summit, our delegate Association members were invited to a dinner hosted by Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard, where they had the opportunity to present information to the mayor and other dignitaries about the organic vegan solution to climate change. It was fantastic news as well to learn from Mexico City Secretary of the Environment Martha Delgado that the summit’s official lunch menu had been planned as vegetarian and thus low-carbon. Rapidly melting Kyrgyz glaciers imperil biodiversity

The Institute of Water Problems and Hydro Energy at the National Academy of Sciences in Bishkek has determined that 20% of glaciers across the nation vanished between the mid-1970s and the year 2000, with the remaining ice fields melting three times faster than previously.

Ilia Domashov, deputy head of the Bishkek NGO BIOM Environmental warned that the glacial melt is affecting not only communities downstream, but also the region’s rich biodiversity.

Although the country occupies only 0.1% of the Earth’s landmass, it is home to a full one percent of its biodiversity, some of which is also unique to Kyrgyzstan.

Mr. Domashov stated, “Certain animals are deeply connected to the glaciers, such as the snow leopard, and they will be affected by the rapid melting. What will happen is that in the short term the level of underground water will rise, but in the long term it will actually fall as glaciers disappear; this will have an impact on ecological systems…”

Rivers and streams vulnerable to groundwater pumping

At the recently held Groundwater 2010 Conference in Canberra, Australia, Dr. David Rassam, scientist for the nation’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) shared new research highlighting the relationship between groundwater use and aquifer eplenishment.

In the study, Dr. Rassam and team confirmed the importance of ensuring that groundwater use did not exceed the ability of aquifers to become replenished, to avoid obvious shortages. They also found, that river replenishment is also dependent on groundwater flow, especially during dry periods.

Citing an example, Dr. Rassam stated, “In this stream … we found that increasing groundwater pumping by 40% caused a 93% reduction in base-flow in the river – (so) it’s not a linear relationship at all.

This demonstrates that preventing water entering aquifers, or pumping too much groundwater out, may lead to complete drying of nearby streams during the dry period. This can happen much more easily than we previously thought. The impacts on local water ecosystems could be dire.”

Many thanks, Dr. Rassam and colleagues, for this reminder of the vital interconnectedness of our natural world. Let us join in practices that conserve water and other precious resources for the sustainable benefit of all beings.

Concerned for humanity during these urgent times, during a July 2008 videoconference in Formosa (Taiwan), Supreme Master Ching Hai suggested our more conscientious care for the gifts of the Earth.

Sea lice from fish farms infecting wild salmon

Canadian researchers have found fish farms to be a major source of sea lice and other marine pathogens that are infesting wild salmon off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. The study reveals that while about five percent of juvenile salmon were affected in areas without fish farms, up to 40% were afflicted in areas with high concentrations of fish farms.

Lead author, Professor John Reynolds of Simon Fraser University, said: “Everyone thought before it was a Broughton-specific problem, and we are showing here that it is a problem in every region we investigated."

In fish farms, attempts are made to control sea lice with medication, but for wild fish, especially the vulnerable young, they can be lethal.

Our appreciation, Professor Reynolds and colleagues, for your efforts to highlight the grave dangers posed by fish farms on surrounding wildlife.

Let us strive to eliminate such life-threatening conditions to ensure the safety of the salmon and all other beings of the wild that grace our Earth.

Groundwater over-pumping linked to sea level rise

Published in the Geophysical Review Letters, a new study by researchers in the Netherlands has shown that runoff and evaporation from worldwide depletion of groundwater accounts for about 25% of today’s rising sea levels.

The scientists reported that volumes of groundwater removal have more than doubled, from 99.7 million acre-feet in 1960 to 229.4 million in 2000. However, at the same time that groundwater use is contributing to sea level rise, it is also creating water shortages due to a general inability for water tables to be quickly
replenished.

Dr. Peter H. Gleick, leading expert on water issues and president of the Oakland-based Pacific Institute in California, USA highlighted the inevitable dwindling of such sources as he said, “Forty percent of our groundwater withdrawals are coming from unsustainable sources of water. By definition, unsustainable means it can’t continue forever.”

The researchers concluded by stating that the effect on sea level rise is expected to diminish, but that is only because continued use at this rate will run the underground basins dry.

Dutch researchers and Dr. Gleick, we appreciate your highlighting the multitude of problems arising from unsustainable resource use. May we all strive for greater consciousness of our water footprint to live more harmoniously with nature.

Arctic warming faster than forecast



Recent temperature readings collected with the help of sea mammals has revealed that the water in Baffin Bay, which links the Arctic Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, is getting warmer. In the study, US scientists led by Dr. Kristin Laidre of the Polar Science Center at Washington University placed a small device with temperature sensing data and satellite transmitter upon narwhals, a native marine mammal with a unicorn-type horn.

The oceanographic instruments measured sea temperatures throughout the winter in Baffin Bay, an area oceanographers had not previously been able to measure. In this study, the researchers found that the isotherm, a layer of winter surface water that normally protects the surface sea ice from higher temperatures below, was 50 to 80 meters thinner than climate models predicted.

This in turn allows the warmer water to mix more with the colder water, speeding the rate of surface ice melting. The researchers also found the water to be about 1 degree Celsius warmer than their previous estimates.

We are grateful, Dr. Laidre and colleagues, for your careful work and observations. Knowing of these threats to the Arctic and their potentially devastating consequences, let us rapidly act to halt climate change.

Ever-concerned for humanity’s balance on the planet, Supreme Master Ching Hai highlighted the perilous implications of such warming, as well as the most efficient solution, during an interview published in the September 2009 edition of The House Magazine.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: According to Dr. Hansen, our planet is on a dangerous course to passing irreversible tipping points with disastrous consequences. These you know already, like melting of the Arctic sea ice which causes oceans to absorb more sunlight and speeds up melting; and the melting of permafrost which in turn releases toxic methane gas, resulting in more warming of the atmosphere; and the extinction of cornerstone species that cause further collapse to our already ailing ecosystems, thus endangering even more species, and most important of all, us humans.

As temperatures continue to increase, methane is released from melting Arctic permafrost as well. This amplified feedback accelerates further global warming.

Thus, if meat eating were to be halted, methane production from livestock would be minimized, and then, consequently all the methane from the permafrost will also be stopped, then we will still have time to handle the CO2. It’s very logical, scientifically speaking and otherwise. So, being veg means saving our planet.

African leaders come together to save Lake Chad

With the Central African lake already 90% depleted and forecast to disappear in less than two decades, African leaders convened for the 13th Ordinary Summit of the States of the Lake Chad Basin Commission in N'Djamena, Republic of Chad.

The hosting country’s President Idris Déby was joined by Presidents Dr. Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, Paul Biya of Cameroon, Salou Djibo of Niger, Francois Bozize of Central African Republic as well as Libyan leader, Muammar al-Gaddafi. Commission chair and President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan noted that climate change and the construction of dams are the main factors behind the lake’s decline, and also that over 30 million people throughout the region have livelihoods that depend on the water basin.

If the lake dries up completely they will be forced to migrate, with huge socio-economic impacts. President Jonathan called for collective action as he announced a donation from Nigeria of US$6 million for rehabilitation projects including feasibility studies that look at water transfers from the Oubangui River.

Livestock sector imperiling the planet



Ecological economists at Dalhousie University in Canada have undertaken one of the most holistic analyses to date on the effect of dietary choices on the environment. Looking at changes forecast through 2050, they found that anticipated growth in the livestock industry was expected to make the eco-impacts significantly worse.

During a phone interview with Supreme Master Television, lead author Dr. Nathan Pelletier explained some of the findings of the report.

Dr. Nathan Pelletier, Dalhousie University, Canada (M): The livestock sector at global scale is thought to count among the top two or three contributors to almost every critical environmental problem. So clearly there are some environmental sustainability concerns associated with this sector.

VOICE: While most research on the environmental impact of dietary patterns has focused on greenhouse gas emissions, Dr. Pelletier and colleague Dr. Peter Tyedmers evaluated a combination of greenhouse gases, biomass appropriations, and reactive nitrogen. Biomass appropriations indicate the amount of plant matter grown to feed livestock, while reactive nitrogen is a relatively new area of study.

Nitrogen is essential for the growth of crops; however, current levels of nitrogen released from manure and fertilizers, most of which is used to grow crops for livestock, are causing significant amounts of reactive compounds such as ammonia to enter the environment.

The release of these compounds leads to acid rain, oceanic dead zones and nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas 296 times more potent than CO2. Because the livestock sector was found to account for 60% biomass appropriation as well as 63% of reactive nitrogen, Drs. Pelletier and Tyedmers have suggested a reduction in meat consumption, saying that emphasizing plant-based foods would be the best way to minimize adverse environmental effects.

Dr. Pelletier (M): For a scenario where humans’ protein needs are met entirely through the production of soy protein, the impact in 2050 would be roughly 1% of the impact of satisfying humanity’s protein needs entirely through the production of livestock.

Rising sea level erodes Solomon Islands food security

Residents of the Solomon Islands’ smaller, more remote islands are witnessing the effects of climate change as rising seas erode their islands. A cemetery, once 50 meters away from the sea, now stands 1 meter from the shoreline, and it is estimated that most houses along the shore will be washed away by 2015.

Sea water has also affected soil salinity, and staple crops like taro are slowly dying off.

Some children have stopped going to school because there is no food to eat, and residents have also lost a source of income because their crops are not substantial enough for them to sell at market.

National project coordinator of Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change (Pacc) Casper Supa stated, “Our people need to eat a balanced diet and nutritional food, but with effects of rising sea level, food crops like taro in Ontong Java are dying. The coastal people depending on swamp taro and local ferns are losing their source of food due to the salinity of the swamp.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to residents of the Solomon Islands. May we all act swiftly to halt such distressing conditions, for the protection of Solomon Islanders and all those who are vulnerable to climate change.

Central China water levels near record lows due to drought

In the first part of November, the Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters of Hunan Province began releasing water from upstream reservoirs, in efforts to restore water to the near-dry Xiangjiang River in Changsha City.

Since October, the river basin has only received 28 millimeters of rainfall, which is 69% percent less than average, causing water levels to drop below the minimum water supply level.

Some sections of the river are completely dry, endangering water safety and sustainability of nearby communities. With no adequate precipitation forecast in the near future, local officials are also constructing emergency water intake points in other sections of the river.

Elsewhere in the nation, officials in the northwest have proposed a pipeline to divert seawater thousands of kilometers from the coast of the eastern Bohai Sea to the drought-stricken Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

Our appreciation, Chinese officials and government, for your efforts to ease the drought conditions. We pray that the affected areas may soon receive blessed rains and that their balance may be restored through our actions in greater harmony with nature.

Expressing concern for the spread of such dangerous conditions in the face of continued global warming, Supreme Master Ching Hai addressed this emerging crisis while offering the most effective solution during a video message for a June 2009 conference in Mexico.

In China’s worst drought in five decades, vital crops were lost in at least 12 northern provinces, costing the nation billions of US dollars in drought relief to farmers with losses.

It might not be that early, but it’s still not too late, we still can rescue our home, planet home. Okay, Number one solution is vegan, organic vegan.

Now, many of these areas where we are seeing such devastating effects of climate change are all directly related to the Earth’s temperature increasing. Organic vegan will produce beneficial cooling effect as it will cut down methane and other greenhouse gases which are fatal to our survival.

Entire whale pod perishes after beaching



A pod of 33 mother and baby pilot whales succumbed after casting themselves onto the shores of Rutland Island in County Donegal of the Republic of Ireland. Dr. Simon Berrow of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group said it was one of the biggest such whale tragedies in the country’s history.

The cause of the beaching is not certain but is thought to be possibly related to sonar equipment used during naval exercises. This pod of whales is believed to be the same one sighted in late October off the west coast of Scotland, with organizations such as the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals placed on alert for possible beaching due to observation of the whales’ labored breathing and other signs of distress.

Although there had been no reports of recent military activity, a spokesperson for the region’s Coastguard stated that several mass strandings of whales had also been linked to the use of naval sonar in the past.

We are deeply saddened by the untimely end to the majestic whales. Our prayers that human’s respectful interaction with the environment will protect these marine beings and all forms of life on our planet.During an August 2009 videoconference in Thailand, Supreme Master Ching Hai expressed her heartfelt concern for the vulnerable lives on the planet and urged for humanity’s greater consideration.

Historical Ice Age could be repeated

A new study published in the scientific journal Nature by researchers at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain explains a reversal in the deep water flow of the Atlantic Ocean during an ice age 20,000 years ago. The Atlantic Ocean circulation is an important component of the world’s climate system, carrying warmth from the tropics to sub-polar North Atlantic.

However, during this past ice age, due to sensitivity to salt balance changes, warm waters began to flow southward rather than northward as they do now. The scientists conducting this study stated that over the next century, similar changes in seawater salt concentration are likely to take place in the North Atlantic due to global warming and the large amounts of freshwater being added from melting land ice.

Dr. Charles Greene, Director of the Ocean Resources and Ecosystems Program at Cornell University, USA, explained.

Charles Greene – Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Director of the Ocean Resources and Ecosystems Program at Cornell University, USA (M): We know that if we look tens, hundreds of thousands of years into the past that there have been occasions where large inputs of fresh water into the North Atlantic has shut down what we call North Atlantic Deep Water formation. So it basically dilutes the salty water of the Gulf Stream or the North Atlantic current, so that when you make it cold, it’s not cold enough to sink to the bottom of the ocean.

And that can initially slow down the conveyor belt in such a way that it reduces the Gulf Stream’s inflow and eventually it can shut down. And since the Gulf Stream is very critical in transporting heat to Europe, the consequence of that is the potential to throw us into Ice Age conditions.

If Europe’s thrown into an Ice Age, we’ll likely be thrown into one as well. And that’s kind of the basis for ‘The Day After Tomorrow” movie, which of course is science fiction, but there was some fundamental science underlying that, which is that the North Atlantic Deep Water formation can be shut down.

VOICE: Dr. Greene pointed out that changes are already occurring within the vast urgent picture of global warming.

Charles Greene (M): This tremendous amount of fresh water that’s entering the world’s oceans is having dramatic effects on the shallower circulation and is having impacts on many of our coastal ecosystems.

We’ve lived in a very stable period in Earth’s history and over the last 10,000-20,000 years, we’ve not seen anything close to the speed and magnitude of the climate change that we’ve observed in the last 30 years.

I think we’re going to start seeing fairly dramatic impacts on our civilization in the next few decades. If we don’t do something very different very soon we’re going to truly see catastrophic changes.

China plans to reduce dioxin emissions

In a report published last week, China's Ministry of Environmental Protection found that in 2009, one third of 113 cities surveyed did not meet national air standards. In an effort to improve air quality, the government has pledged to reduce dioxin emissions’ intensity 10% across key industries by 2015.

More than 10,000 enterprises, most involved in the manufacture of chemicals, steel and paper-making as well as garbage incineration, must install efficient filters on their exhaust systems by mid-2011. Dioxin-emitting facilities must also conduct annual inspections with published environmental reports and updated online statistics.

Dioxin is highly poisonous; it affects the immune system and is known to cause cancer. According to the World Health Organization, only small amounts of dioxin are directly absorbed by humans through the air. As a fat-soluble substance, over 90% of dioxin exposure comes through food, with meat, dairy products, fish and shellfish containing the highest amounts.

China, we appreciate your efforts to improve citizens’ health and restore the environment. Water accelerating ice sheet melt

A study from the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) in Colorado, USA considers for the first time the effect of melt water as it flows into ice sheets in places like Greenland and the Arctic. The scientists found that as the water spreads along ice crevasses, factures or large drains, it speeds the melting of vast areas such as the Greenland Ice Sheet and could result in disintegration over decades rather than centuries, as previously forecast.

Research scientist and lead author Thomas Phillips said, “We are finding that once such water flow is initiated through a new section of ice sheet, it can warm rather significantly and quickly, sometimes in just 10 years.” CIRES Director Konrad Steffen also noted that this melt water data has been overlooked in prior models of Greenland warming, and thus could offer key information in understanding a more rapid ice decline.

Rising temperatures damaging Arctic lake ecosystems

A collaborative study among Canadian, American and European scientists has found that climate change appears to be causing increased growth of a certain bacteria in high altitude Arctic lakes. This is because the now-melting water bodies have become home to growing populations of algae, which decompose and cause certain bacteria to multiply.

Increased bacterial populations have been observed to reduce the water’s sulfate levels but unfortunately at the same time cause the release of toxic methylmercury. In this study, the scientists measured sulfate levels in sediment collected from nine Arctic lakes throughout Canada and Norway. They first of all noted that the bacteria indeed affected the waters’ sulfur levels.

Lead author Dr. Paul Drevnick of the University of Quebec in Canada went on to express concern that as the sulfur levels go down with higher temperatures, the methylmercury generated is not only causing further disruption to the biochemistry of the lakes, it is also reaching toxic levels in animals such as seals and beluga whales, with resulting damage to their reproduction, development and behavior.

The scientists are now planning further studies to verify these effects. Thank you Dr. Drevnick, and all researchers involved in sharing this information on how climate change and human activities are adversely impacting Arctic ecosystems.

Mars exploration rover finds evidence of life-supporting water



Soil samples analyzed from the area where the Mars rover Spirit came to a halt in April 2009 has identified a range of minerals that include hematite, silica, gypsum, and ferric sulfates. US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientists believe that these substances appeared when liquid from melting snow seeped through the surface and carried the minerals down several layers below Mars’ crust. This soil could provide clues to other areas of Mars that may also contain water.

Moreover, scientists had once thought that water formed billions of years ago on the red planet. This discovery, however, is a sign that the liquid may have formed in the past several hundred thousand years.

Pacific Island nations face possible future of lifeless waters



A new report, published by the intergovernmental Secretariat of the Pacific Community based in New Caledonia warns that overfishing and climate change could empty the regions’ waters of fish in just 25 years.

The report noted that some types of tuna are already dangerously overexploited and that as fish populations around the world decline, the region would face even more pressure from foreign fleets.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), more than 1,800 fish species are at risk of extinction worldwide, representing more than 20% of all populations. Many scientists have pointed out that these changes represent a sixth mass extinction in the past half a billion years on Earth, with this being the first to be caused by humans.

International scientists, we are grateful for your efforts to alert the public to the hazardous changes that could soon lead to complete depletion of marine life. May humanity quickly turn to such sustaining measures as plant-based food choices for our oceans to thrive once more.

Arctic warming has global implications

The recently released annual Arctic Report Card, authored by scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Colorado, USA, noted that warming continues at an unprecedented rate, with effects that are spreading further south than ever before.

Produced by nearly 70 collaborating researchers, this year’s update revealed that 2009-2010 summer sea ice was at its third lowest since satellite monitoring began in 1979, and snow cover duration saw an all-time minimum. In Greenland, lack of precipitation combined with record high air temperatures resulted in the worst ice melt and glacial area loss in at least five decades.

NOAA Administrator Dr. Jane Lubchenco stated, “Beyond affecting the humans and wildlife that call the area home, the Arctic's warmer temperatures and decreases in permafrost, snow cover, glaciers and sea ice also have wide-ranging consequences for the physical and biological systems in other parts of the world.”

Dr. Lubchenco and fellow National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists, our sincere thanks for the alert to these further Arctic changes, despite their disturbing implications. May humanity respond quickly by choosing lifestyles that protect and cool our Earth. Diverse sectors support a plant-based society as climate change solution

During the November 3 conference, “Leaders Preserving Our Future: Pace & Priorities on Climate Change,” held at the Central Hall Westminster in London, United Kingdom, distinguished scientists explained how the production of food, and in particular livestock raising, is seriously impacting global warming, biodiversity loss, water shortages, and more.

Geoff Tansey – Trustee, Food Ethics Council, UK (M): The Food Ethics Council along with WWF has been looking at consumption of meat and dairy, because this is a significant part of our greenhouse gases in the UK.

Dr. Pat Brown – Biochemist, Stanford University, USA, vegan (M): Most of the developed world in northern hemisphere’s crop cultivation isn’t crops to feed humans, it’s to feed that huge population of animals that we bring along with us.

Anthony Kleanthous – Senior policy advisor on Sustainable Business and Economics WWF (M): We have lost 30% of the biodiversity on this planet in just 40 years. And in the tropics we’re talking about 60% declines in biodiversity. That just cannot continue. If it does, we won’t have anything to eat and we won’t have anything to fuel our economy. Food is one of the three greatest impacts on our environment. And as we’ve heard today, you know meat and dairy really are the primary concern here.

Prof. Arjen Hoekstra – Scientific director, Water Footprint Network (M): So forget about this water-saving toilet, forget about this showerhead. It’s not where you save the water, because the water footprint is in the supermarket.

VOICE: As the priority issues were defined, solutions were also presented, urging government and the food industry, as well as individuals, toward constructive actions. Jens Holm – Member of Swedish Parliament, vegetarian (M): The European Union subsidizes the meat industry, with direct subsidies, with about €3 billion a year. This is a huge amount of money, and imagine what we could do with this big amount of money, if we put it where it could cause some positive effect for the world: production of vegetarian foods, etc.

Wally Fry – CEO and Co-founder, Fry’s Vegetarian, vegan (M): Let us awaken the intellect in industry, and by using it as our master instructor, start the environmental revolution, which will go down in history as a far greater thing than the industrial revolution ever was.

Lisa Bloom – CNN & CBS TV News Network Legal Analyst, USA, vegan (F): As a lifelong vegetarian I have quietly enjoyed the good health and enormous energy of my plant-based diet for three decades. But I can remain quiet no longer. Diet can no longer be a matter of private choice, when the choice to buy meat and dairy products causes unspeakable cruelty to sentient beings, and when the choice is destroying our planet.

VOICE: Invited as the special guest of honor, Supreme Master Ching Hai shared encouragement via video message urging leaders and co-citizens alike to make courageous Earth-saving changes.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: The way we are going with our consumption rate, the World Wildlife Fund researchers said that we’d need a second planet. It’s high time that we advance to better ways as a society. A nobler way as a society. And governments could use their subsidies for people’s greatest benefit, by supporting the Earth-saving organic vegan farming practices and promoting a healthy, sustainable, resource-efficient food industry. Now, some of us might question: Can our world really eliminate the global meat industry and become all vegan? The facts tell us yes, we can. And our humanity’s survival instinct tells us we must.

Georgina Fitzalan-Howard, Duchess of Norfolk (F): It'd have a huge impact if more people went vegetarian, I mean, everyone would be lighter and happier and they wouldn't need so much medication, wouldn't need such huge healthcare. There's huge implications!

Dr. Karl Roberts – High Commissioner for Antigua and Barbuda (M): Certainly, if we can move away from the meat-based or animal-based consumption, to greater consumption of vegetables that we will be able to grow rather than having them imported in, suddenly we will see a more rapid benefit to the quality of life and also to the negative effect of climate changes.

Kerry McCarthy – British MP, vegan (F): If this can help raise it up so that people are aware that they shouldn’t just be lobbying their MPs about aviation and things like that, they should also be lobbying them about the livestock sector, I think that’s really important.

UK climate change conference addresses priority areas

On November 3, the non-profit World Preservation Foundation hosted a unique gathering at the historic Central Hall Westminster in London, with speakers from government, science, media and advocacy organizations, to discuss the increasingly evident effects of climate change and its important connections to food production and consumption.

"Leaders Preserving Our Future: Pace & Priorities Climate Change," which held a press conference at the British Houses of Parliament, was attended by experts and dignitaries such as the Duchess of Norfolk; High Commissioner for Antigua and Barbuda, Dr. Karl Roberts; Dr. Ester Van Der Voet, a representative from the United Nations Environment Program, and the ambassadors of such countries as Russia, Bolivia, Nepal, and others. The session began as respected international experts presented some of the pressing issues of global warming and their links to agriculture.

David Vaughan – Climatologist, British Antarctic Survey (M): There are, in the polar regions, two large ice sheets: one in Greenland, and one in Antarctica. Each has the capacity, the ice in it to raise global sea level by many meters.

Prof. Jefferson Simoes – Director of Brazilian National Institute for Cryospheric Sciences (M): You have the red curve that are the number of fires reported in the Amazon forest. And at the same time, we have the concentration of black carbon, and it really goes together – we are having the transport of black carbon to Antarctica. It’s really related to the expansion of cash crops and cattle farming.

VOICE: Speakers further addressed meat production’s impacts on the environment, as well as the opportunity to resolve them through changing diet and farming practices on a wide scale.

John Topping – Founder and President, Climate Institute, USA (M): There are a remarkable number of win-win aspects when we talk about reducing methane: moving to a plant-based diet which would reduce both CO2 and methane and probably doing that primarily on a health basis.

Dr. Ester van der Voet – Industrial ecologist, Leiden University, The Netherlands (F): So on the left you see a lot of different crops, while on the right you see the animal products. And if you’ll just look at it, through your eyelashes you can see that the greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram are a lot higher for these animal products than they are for the crops.

VOICE: During the conference, national-level legislators, including British Members of Parliament Mr. Chris Williamson and vegan Ms. Kerry McCarthy, discussed necessary government actions.

Chris Williamson – British MP (M): We’ve also I think got to win the hearts and minds of the wider general public, and that means, I think, looking at how we can encourage people to look at lifestyle, how they can encourage people to perhaps eat less meat, given that the livestock industry does contribute to a large extent to climate change emissions.

Kerry McCarthy – British MP, Vegan (F): While we’re trying to fight the battle for adopting a more environmentally friendly diet in this country and across Europe, we need to be trying to take that argument to the developing world too and issues like deforestation, climate change and lack of water supply.

VOICE: In addition, health, social, humane, and industrial benefits of shifting away from animal products were also advocated by such expert as esteemed American physician Dr. Joel Fuhrman.

Dr Joel Fuhrman – Physician and Director of US National Health Association (M): It’s the fountain of youth. When you follow a plant-based diet rich in micronutrients with vegetables, and beans and mushrooms and onions, which all have particular and specific ingredients, which target the cell’s repair mechanisms to increase the DNA repair from broken cross-links which could lead to cancer, these foods have healing properties to protect the body against diseases that ravage modern society.

VOICE: The event’s special guest of honor was Supreme Master Ching Hai, who delivered a message via video on solving the large environmental crises of concern in the meeting. Touched by her heartfelt words, some attending VIPs later requested copies of her message.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Thus, if these six factors are not stopped fast, we risk losing everything. I mean everything! So please consider what is really at stake now, what is really our foremost-urgent priority at the present time. It’s not just political reputation or economy. It’s the lives, real lives, of all inhabitants on Earth; humans, animals, plants, trees, etc. Even without the "civilization busters" threatening our planet’s survival, an organic vegan diet would immensely improve the quality of our lives, spiritually also.

It can curb the water and food crises and restore nature’s life-support systems. It also happens to be the most rapid, cost-effective, and the only feasible climate solution, one that every nation can easily implement.

In sum, only with the organic vegan solution can we still save our planet. Respected and honorable ladies and gentlemen, I beseech you and all the leaders, to please, help our world, please save our planet.

Venus shows signs of recent geological activity

A team of scientists led by researcher Dr. Nataliya Bondarenko of the University of California, Santa Cruz in the USA has found evidence of what may be recent volcanic activity on Venus. Analyzing data from a past US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) space mission, the scientists evaluated heat being emitted by more than 1,000 volcanoes on the planet’s surface.

They spotted a lava flow in Venus’ northern hemisphere that appeared to be some 185 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than expected. This detection of heat not only signifies an eruption that is likely only decades old, it could mean that Venus overall is more geologically active than was previously understood.

What a fascinating discovery! Supreme Master Ching Hai spoke of the history behind Venus’s volatility and how such insights are reminders of the need for humanity to be better stewards of our own planet Earth.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Our neighboring planets like Venus, Mars, have similar landscape. Some are more strikingly exquisite, more beautiful. It was once a beautiful planet, and now it’s no more. There’s no life up there at all, not life as we know of. It’s a pity. Within a few weeks’ time, the whole planet was destroyed.

Yes, destroyed because of the poisonous gases, yes from livestock. Of course, it triggered other gases yeah? from the ocean, from the warm ocean as you know. It’s similar to our planetary problem right now.

It happened too fast for them. And they did not really have time. They did not really care about this vegetarian diet. They did not really go into any spiritual dimension.

Some time ago, I said if we have like, two-thirds of the planet population vegetarian, then we could have saved the planet too, but now it’s too late. Now we need the whole planet population to be compassionate. Vegan would be the best.

European Commission seeks stronger protection of bluefin tuna

The executive branch of the European Union has been striving for an agreement from member nations on quotas that would ensure the improved survival of large endangered ocean fish.

With species such as the bluefin tuna facing extinction, one goal is to achieve a unified position ahead of a meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) slated for November in Paris, France.

Meanwhile, conservation group World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is calling for the establishment of no-fishing zones for bluefin tuna in six Mediterranean Sea regions, saying that without such actions, the species could be extinct as early as 2012.

In an interview with Supreme Master Television, Mayor René Vestri of Cape Ferrat in southeastern France expressed his concern for the plight of the bluefin tuna.

René Vestri Mayor of Cape Ferrat, France (M): Nowadays, the future of the bluefun tuna is threatened. I am sad to see that we did not take actions in Europe. We have not taken measures so that this bluefin tuna would be protected. Because there’s the economic aspect, I understand.

But when we see what happens and that they are an endangered species… anyway, we must respond.

VOICE: In addition to protective governmental policies, the importance of changing our lifestyles was also raised.

Ms. Collette Aupy, Assistant to Mayor Vestri of Cape Ferrat, France (F): When we realize that we destroy the planet, we can only become a vegetarian.

René Vestri, Mayor of Cape Ferrat, France (M): And this sea, it must be protected. Because for many, the sea is a surface, it is something on which we move. But the sea is a volume. This third dimension is actually a living volume, and it’s this life that must be protected, and if we can, enhance it further, maintain it.

VOICE: Our appreciation, Mayor Vestri, Madam Aupy, European Commission, World Wildlife Fund and all others for your concerned voices raised on behalf of marine life such as the bluefin tuna.

May our actions be swift in avoiding further devastation of the vital ocean ecosystems, with the priority being an animal-free diet.

As during a May 2009 videoconference in Togo, Supreme Master Ching Hai has frequently urged for the protection of vital marine co-inhabitants to save the planet.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: If we say that the ocean ecosystems are dependent on fish populations to be balanced, then those ecosystems are extremely imbalanced right now. Scientists estimate that more than 90% of the oceans’ big fish have disappeared over the last 50 years due to commercial fishing.

And from the oceans themselves, we are seeing other signs such as warming temperatures, rising sea levels, increasing acidification and terrible levels of pollution.

This is an equally urgent situation as the one presented by livestock industry, and it has the exact same solution. Stop eating the flesh; stop killing for food; stop eating the fish. This will help restore the balance of both the ocean and land, immediately.

Rising mega-landslides likely due to global warming

Permafrost, or permanently frozen soil, on high mountain peaks provided the “glue” to keep steep mountain slopes together. However, the past decade has brought increased incidents on mountains across the world as rising temperatures destabilize the ground, turning frozen soil to mud.

US environmental consultant Daniel Tormey studied a massive landslide 11,000 years ago occurring on Chile’s Planchón-Peteroa volcano, where it was determined that glacier melt had triggered the collapse of the volcano’s cone and a landslide containing 10 billion cubic meters of rock that collided with 370 square kilometers of land.

British researcher Dr. Bill McGuire of University College London highlighted similar the threats to modern cities such as Seattle, USA, stating, “We have found that 39 cities with populations greater than 100,000 are situated within 100 kilometers of a volcano that has collapsed in the past and which may, therefore, be capable of collapsing in the future.”

We thank Mr. Tormey, Dr. McGuire and others for alerting us to this lesser-known effect of global warming facing societies around the world. May such research prompt the global community to act quickly to reverse this dangerous course in time. During a videoconference with our Association members in Canada, Supreme Master Ching Hai spoke of the most comprehensive approach to effectively address the increasing impacts of climate change.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: The only refuge would be the virtues, the noble way of living that we have to adhere to Heaven’s standard of life. Otherwise, no matter what solution, there will be some other consequences coming.

I’m really at a loss now. Just too much, everywhere there’s something that happens, then we cannot compete with nature forever, except we are listening to her call to live in harmony with all beings. To live and let live, be vegetarian and be green. That’s the utmost solution. That’s the most important solution that we must take.

Agreement reached at major UN biodiversity conference

The two-week United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity in Nagoya, Japan has concluded on a successful note, thanks to the marathon talks of representatives hailing from over 190 nations who worked together for 10 days seeking ways to better protect the planet’s ecosystem and endangered species.

Among the participants was Oscar-nominated US actor, producer, and board member of the group Conservation International, Harrison Ford, who urged leaders to take action.

Harrison Ford, Oscar-nominated US actor & producer, Conservation International Board member (M): I think it’s in our own human self-interest to put national interests aside to the extent that it’s necessary and possible, and come together on an international basis to support biodiversity – it is the foundation of life on Earth.

It’s in the interest of every nation, the community of nations, to come together and focus on a very time-critical issue.

VOICE: After discussing late into the night of Friday, October 29, delegates finalized a 20-point Strategic Plan to protect 17% of the world’s land and 10% of the oceans by 2020.

Currently, only about 12.5% of land and less than 1% of oceans are protected. To achieve these new objectives, wealthier nations committed to financially assist less developed nations in necessary measures for reducing pollution, over-exploitation, and habitat destruction.

However, despite the success of their accord, some scientists and other concerned advocates pointed out that these goals are not large enough and that other measures, such as a change in human diet, are key to the crucial conservation of Earth’s wildlife and resources.

In fact, studies presented by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) revealed that reducing meat consumption would be among the single-most effective ways to more quickly halt biodiversity loss.

Furthermore, it was found that combining the plant-based diet with other nature preservation initiatives could bring even greater ecological and economic benefits.

Supreme Master Television (F): Supreme Master Television. My question is: UN mentioned in a recent report that a plant-based diet is an immediate solution for it. How can we cooperate with each other to attain this goal?

Achim Steiner – Executive Director, UN Environment Program (UNEP) (M): You are referring to the overall question of consumption footprints on our planet. It’s much of the work that UNEP, by drawing on the signs related to agriculture, the consumption patterns, production patterns brings out.

What is quite clear that we are, as we look toward the linked issues of loss of biodiversity, ecosystems, food security, carbon emissions associated with the agricultural sector and the livestock sector, we also have an opportunity here to change, in a sense, a number of impacts.

Dr. Ann Larigauderie - Executive Director, DIVERSITAS (F): For example being more vegetarian would be a major contribution to the biodiversity problem. There are others, but that would be a big one. In fact, there is a really high environmental cost in eating meat. It would be much more efficient to eat lower n the food chain, that is, for more people to be vegetarians.

VOICE: Our gratefulness, Dr. Larigauderie, Executive Director Steiner, Mr. Harrison Ford, and all participants at this pivotal meeting for your dedication to safeguarding the inhabitants of our precious Earth. May the most constructive policies quickly be adopted to save all natural species and thus humankind, starting from the immediately effective, sustainable vegan lifestyle. As in this April 2009 videoconference in South Korea, Supreme Master Ching Hai has often pointed out that the most time- and cost-feasible solutions also consider the survival of all lives.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: We should all remember that we share this planetary abode, the water, the air, the resources, the food, all of nature, we share only. We should not be possessive of nature.

So, the best thing we can do for all the animals is to stop causing suffering to them, stop killing them, stop eating them, stop damaging all our habitats. Stop damaging our environment.

Be veg, go green and save their planet too, the planet of the animals.

It restores the balance of our oceans and forests and preserves our finite natural resources. This is truly the best way to restore our environment and ensure the highest degree of peace.

Such a simple solution – being veg - that’s it.
